Natural or artificial stone? What to choose?

One of the most frequently discussed topics when furnishing a home or planning an interior design project is what to choose: natural stone or artificial stone (quartz)?

Both of these materials are widely used in interior design: for kitchen countertops, bathrooms, wall finishes, and other architectural details. However, they have different properties, so it is worth getting to know them better before making a choice.

There is no single correct answer. Every project is different - the vision, interior style, intensity of use, and of course, budget vary. Therefore, we invite you to briefly familiarize yourself with the main properties of these materials to make it easier to decide which stone is best suited for your project.

Artificial stone (quartz)

Artificial stone, commonly referred to as quartz, is a composite material made from natural quartz minerals, polymer binders, and pigments.

Most of this material consists of quartz crystals, which are pressed and bonded with binders. This process produces strong and uniform quartz stone slabs, which are widely used in interior design. It is important to understand that although it contains natural quartz, this material is not a natural rock—it is manufactured industrially.

Advantages of artificial stone

  • very hard
  • often a more economical solution
  • uniform pattern and color between slabs
  • marble, quartzite, or travertine imitations available
  • wide range of surfaces, colors, and patterns
  • resistant to most household chemicals and moisture
  • scratch resistant (to a certain extent)
  • easy to maintain

Possible disadvantages

  • prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may cause minimal color change
  • moderate resistance to very high temperatures (heat)

Where quartz stone is most commonly used

Artificial stone (quartz) is most commonly used:

  • kitchen countertops and kitchen islands
  • floors (less common)
  • wall finishes
  • bathroom countertops

Quartz is also widely used in commercial interiors – hotels, restaurants, offices, and retail spaces.

Natural stone

Natural stone is rock formed by geological processes and extracted from quarries. These materials are formed over millions of years by temperature, pressure, and mineral crystallization. Natural stone slabs are valued for their authenticity – each one has a unique pattern created by nature.

The following types of natural stone are most commonly used in interior design and architecture:

  • granite
  • marble
  • quartzite
  • travertine

However, to make it easier to compare materials, in this case we will use the most durable and most commonly chosen natural stone by customers – quartzite.

Advantages of natural stone – quartzite

  • very hard and durable
  • high aesthetic value
  • wide selection of unique patterns and natural colors
  • long service life
  • resistant to moisture and most chemicals
  • high resistance to temperature changes (heat, cold)
  • resistant to scratches and wear

Possible disadvantages

  • usually more expensive than artificial stone
  • more complex processing
  • due to natural formation, the patterns or colors of the slabs may vary
  • sometimes requires additional maintenance (impregnation)

Where natural stone is used - quartzite

Natural stone is used both indoors and outdoors.

Interior

  • kitchen countertops and kitchen islands
  • stairs
  • floors
  • wall finishes
  • bathroom countertops

Exterior

  • facades
  • architectural elements
  • outdoor flooring

So what should you choose?

Natural stone or artificial stone – both choices can be excellent. The decision usually depends on:

  • interior style
  • budget
  • maintenance requirements
  • intensity of use

For some, natural materials and unique patterns are most important, while others prefer uniformity, easier maintenance, and price. Therefore, the best solution is always the one that best suits your project.
